Full Job Description

Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Performing Arts Department of Emerson College is seeking an adjunct faculty member to teach 1-2 sections of Languages of the Stage (TH101), our “introduction to theatre” course for theatre majors, during the Fall 2025 semester, September 3-December 16, 2025.

TH101 is designed specifically for first-year students majoring in Performing Arts and is essentially a discussion course. It introduces students to methods of analysis as a means to examine theatrical styles, i.e., “languages” of the stage, culminating in an exploration of contemporary work. Students learn various approaches to play analysis and the “languages” of working in the theatre from the varied perspectives of theatre professionals (actors, directors, designers, playwrights, etc.) working in different disciplines, focused on their distinctive contributions to the creation of an integrated theatrical collaboration. Central to the course is an examination of the relationship between the literary and performative dimensions of drama, and the relationship between theatre and its cultural context, in particular how systems of oppression and modes of resistance to the inherent values and cultural domination of “Western” theatre have operated on individual and structural levels since its origins in Classicism to the present day.

This unique course is fundamentally team-taught and meets 3 times each week, the first meeting on Mondays from 12-1:45 as a large group of 60-80 students. New teachers to the course are required to attend (but not instruct) for this “lecture.” The other two meetings are in smaller “discussion” groups of 16-20 and for the Fall 2025 term are scheduled Monday/Wednesday 4-5:45 (TH101 section 1) and Wednesday/Friday 12-1:45 (TH101 section 3). This is an in-person course and is scheduled to meet a total of 28 times in discussion with an additional 14 times in the lecture.

We encourage applications from candidates who teach about the performing arts in ways that expose power relationships and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant cultures and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Any questions regarding the position can be directed to Eric Weiss (eric_weiss@emerson.edu) and Lindsay Beamish (lindsay_beamish@emerson.edu).

To apply, please submit CV and cover letter. All the required materials can be uploaded through the “CV/CoverLetter/Additional Documents” section in the application interface/site. You can upload each document separately or as a combined PDF. Your application will not be complete without these documents.
