The mission of the Department of Aviation Science is to combine academic studies and flight training in order to prepare graduates for a wide variety of positions within the air transportation industry, including general, airline and military aviation. Successful candidates will be staff members that can work with their colleagues to help meet the mission of the department of Aviation Science in serving and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse campus community.
Position Summary
To ensure compliance with FAA regulations, BSU is conducting a search for an Assistant Chief Flight Instructor - Standards and Evaluation.The Assistant Chief Flight Instructor - Standards and Evaluation works from the Bridgewater State University Flight Training Center at New Bedford Regional Airport located in New Bedford, MA. Standards and Evaluation provides leadership and direction for BSU Aviation Science instructor standardization and recurrent training programs.
Supervision Received: Reports to the Chief Flight Instructor.
Supervision Exercised: Supervises check and line flight instructors.
TOUR OF DUTY: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
(Subject to change) (Saturday and Sunday as days off)
This is a full-time, 12-month APA position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.
Essential Duties
- Serves as FAA Assistant Chief Instructor.
- Manages the CFI initial and recurrent standardization training program.
- Conducts and/or coordinates stage checks, instructor proficiency checks, upgrade and standardization training, and/or other training as designated by the Chief Instructor.
- Advises the Chief Instructor on the nomination and selection of check instructor candidates.
- Coordinates with Flight Training Coordinator to schedule instructor training activity.
- Analyzes stage check performance data as measure of training quality. Utilizes data to improve instructional content and delivery methods to exceed 80% first-time pass rate on all mid-course and end-of-course stage checks.
- Executes the Instructor Quality Evaluation (IQE) program to assess and improve individual CFI instructional performance.
- Recommends policy and procedural changes necessary to advance BSU Aviation training goals and objectives.
- Conducts ground and flight training, including stage checks, instructor proficiency checks, standardization training, and/or other training as designated by the Chief Instructor.
- Maintains current and accurate staff 141 CFR 141.79 personnel records.
- Assists as necessary with accreditation and assessment efforts.
- Conducts appropriate annual professional development activity.
- Performs other duties as necessary to achieve program goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications
- Meets FAA 14 CRF Part 141.36 and (d) Assistant Chief Instructor qualifications.
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in 14 CFR Part 141 flight training operations, including experience as a check airman.
- Possesses valid FAA Commercial Pilot (ASEL/AMEL), CFI/CFII, and FAA 3rd Class Medical certificate (or BasicMed).
- Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated skill and ability in writing, developing and evaluating procedural guidelines and manuals.
- Experience using data development and analysis to improve company practices.
- Experience demonstrating safe practices and procedures in aviation operations.
- Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, various Windows utilities, and web-based applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- FAA certified Airline Transport Pilot. FAASTeam Representative or similar experience.
- Experience with compliance and records management.
- Experience with assessment and accreditation.
- Experience with educational institution policies, practices, and procedures.
- No past, current, or pending FAA actions on the individual's pilot and/or instructor certificate.
