The Costume Production Assistant at Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) assists the Costume Shop team in the execution of costume designs for select BCB productions. The Costume Production Assistant helps with sourcing costume pieces, budget tracking, purchases/returns, rentals and fittings, participating in the process from pre-production through strike.

As part of the Performance Services department, the Costume Production Assistant reports to the Costume Shop Manager, works closely with the wardrobe team and stage managers, collaborates closely with students and guest designers. Expected to work approximately 5-10 hours per week during costume shop hours (M-F, 9am-5pm), with additional nights and weekends required during technical and dress rehearsals.

As part of the Performance Services department, the Costume Production Assistant reports to the Costume Shop Manager, works closely with the wardrobe team and stage managers, collaborates closely with students and guest designers. Expected to work approximately 15-20 hours per week (annual average) during costume shop hours (M-F, 9am-5pm), with additional nights and weekends required during technical and dress rehearsals.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Supports the execution of designs for select BCB productions across theater, dance and opera
● Attends production meetings, as requested by Costume Shop Manager and Designers
● Pulls stand-in costume items for rehearsals, in collaboration with the Costume Stock Manager and Designers
● Assists with sourcing costume pieces and fabric for purchase or rental, online and in person
● Assists with organizing and inventorying rental costumes and documenting usage
● Assists with costume purchases; completes purchases and returns online and in person; works closely with the Costume Shop Manager and Designers to track receipts and keep budgets up-to-date
● Attends costume fittings to assist costume shop staff and Designers in marking and notating costume alterations, labeling and taking photos
● Works closely with the Costume Shop Manager to create and update all costume paperwork (tracks, piece lists, costume plots, etc.)
● Attends technical and dress rehearsals to assist with troubleshooting, evaluation, and designer coordination, as needed
● Assists the Wardrobe Manager with costume strike; sorts show costumes for return to stock or rental houses, restocks costume items stored on site
● Assists with recording student measurements for all shop-supported productions
● Upholds proper safety measures and assists with shop housekeeping. In consultation with the Stock Manager, ensures stockrooms are well organized and updated as needed, and assists in maintaining
inventory of supplies, stock fabrics, notions, and office materials.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience or training
● Minimum 1 year experience working in the costume field

● Experience working as an Assistant Costume Designer or Costume PA a plus

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
● Competency in all aspects of Costume operations in theater, dance and opera
● Experience with the Google Workspace
● Knowledge of and experience with basic accounting procedures; working within a budget
● Excellent organizational skills


SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
● Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
● Extremely detail oriented and paperwork-driven
● Ability to work well under pressure and with large groups of diverse personalities and priorities
● Ability to remain flexible in a fast-paced environment


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Student workers, Costume Shop Interns


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
● Indoor environments, some with low light: costume shop, costume stock, stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms


SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:
● Some nights and weekends required
● Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and climb ladders up to 12ft
● Seated and standing positions, crouching, kneeling
