ABOUT THE WATER DEPARTMENT:
The Cambridge Water Department (CWD) is a municipally owned and operated water utility, responsible for the treatment and delivery of water to the residents of Cambridge and the preservation, protection, and management of the City's watershed and its two reservoirs.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Under the direction of the Reservoir System Manager, you will implement the Fresh Pond Reservation Ranger Program in the City’s largest open space which protects the drinking water supply. You will work in conjunction with the other Ranger to provide 7-day coverage of Fresh Pond Reservation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Your specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Create and implement interpretive public education and outreach programs and their materials
Manage and update web content and social media
Create, manage, and post signage throughout watershed properties
Patrol reservation and enforce rules, issue non-criminal citations for parking and other offenses, and coordinate enforcement with other public safety officials to encourage and maintain public safety and mitigate user conflicts
Develop, coordinate, and supervise volunteer stewardship activities
Monitor and document activities and provide a site presence on weekends and other high use periods
Maintain records and files; create incident, weekly activity, volunteer, and other reports
Assess conditions of facilities and grounds to identify and implement reservation maintenance tasks
Act as a liaison to and support the Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation
Work with the other Ranger to plan, coordinate, and implement annual Fresh Pond Day event
Operate and maintain Fresh Pond Reservation census field equipment; collect usership information, surveys
Perform other duties or activities as may be needed and/or assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following areas: environmental education, environmental/natural sciences, natural resources management, forestry, parks and recreation management or equivalent experience
- At least three (3) years ranger experience, preferably in urban parks
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Valid class D motor vehicle operator’s license; Valid CPR and standard first aid certificates
- Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics programs
- Ability to learn new software programs
- Great public speaking skills and ability to write clearly and concisely
- Ability to be appointed a licensed constable in the City of Cambridge

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS:
- Ability to ability to hike/walk in uneven terrain for extended periods of time in urban and forest environments in all weather conditions
- Physical stamina and endurance to perform outdoor work
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Work is primarily outdoors, in all weather conditions, in an off-leash environment.
- Some work is conducted in an office environment with fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, computers, and other standard office equipment
- Work also involves meetings in other offices or facilities
- Must have sufficient mobility to get back and forth from office to offsite meetings, facilities, and watershed.
- This position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s new Telework Policy, depending on operational needs
