The AAC Academic Advising team supports approximately 25% of BSU undergraduate students and is one of five departments located within the AAC. Other AAC departments include: Learning Assistance, Student Accessibility Services, Testing Services, and Transfer Services. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion. This position is located on campus in Bridgewater, MA. Opportunities for some remote work may be available in accordance with BSU telecommuting policies.Position Summary
The Staff Associate, Coordinator of the new BSU Success Program will be primarily responsible for the coordination of two key program components: the development and management of cohort classes for participating students and serving as the primary advisor to student participants. As Success Program Coordinator, the Staff Associate will work with Academic Affairs staff and faculty as well as with cross-divisional partners in Student Success Equity and Inclusion. The Coordinator will work with BSU faculty to identify appropriate courses to serve as cohort classrooms and coordinate registration of students into those courses. As the primary advisor to participating students, the Coordinator will cultivate relationships with students, assist in setting academic goals and degree planning, as well as support navigating university policies, procedures, and advising technologies.Additionally, as an Staff Associate in the Academic Achievement Center this person will support academic advising initiatives in the Academic Achievement Center to ensure the delivery of quality academic advising services in an inclusive, equity-minded manner through proactive, holistic advising. This position will focus on meeting the diverse needs of all students including: African American/Black, Latinx, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, Multiracial and first-generation college students. These efforts support the overall success of our student population.Supervision Received: Reports to the Director of Academic Advising, Academic Achievement Center
This is a full-time, grant funded position with funding secured through June 30, 2027. An extension of the position is anticipated at the conclusion of the grant, but will be contingent upon funding.
Essential Duties
- Serve as academic advisor for a diverse caseload of students participating in the new BSU Success Program (entering students with a high school GPA between 2.0 and 2.6).
- Use inclusive practices to lead the design and execution of registration processes that enroll new students into linked courses as a cohort.
- Assist assigned students through the transition to college, provide ongoing relationship building, academic counseling for degree completion, and make referrals to appropriate resources and services on campus to support a sense of belonging and students' overall success.
- Use equity-oriented practices to assess advising data, prepare reports, and monitor the needs of the target population, recommending new initiatives that encourage involvement and empower learning among students in the cohort.
- Provide academic advising and conduct exit interviews for students seeking withdrawal from courses and/or the university as needed.
- Actively participate in academic advising staff meetings and assist with overall program planning and delivery.
- Cultivate positive working relationships with AAC colleagues as well as faculty as advising liaison to specific departments or college(s).
- Cultivate positive working relationships with other university staff who are also directly involved in supporting students in the target group.
- Support the planning of advising programming for new student orientation.
- Contribute to department and university initiatives that impact student retention, success, diversity and inclusion.
- Appropriately utilize campus technologies such as Banner, InfoBear, Degree Works, and Navigate.
- Perform other job tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree
- 3 years equivalent experience in the areas of academic advising, academic support services and/or college instruction. Commitment to customer service excellence to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to build working relationships with a diverse community of students, faculty, administrators and staff.
- Knowledge of education equity-oriented student success best practices.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and serve as student advocate to coordinate additional services as needed.
- Commitment to customer service excellence/support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Degree Works and Banner systems.
- Experience planning, executing, and assessing advising programming.
- Language proficiency in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and/or French.
