Job Description

Under the direction of the Manager, Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and Linen Services, the Supervisor, SPD ensures the safe, efficient, and accurate receipt, storage, ordering and delivery of supplies, equipment, instruments, and linen throughout the institute. The SPD Supervisor will also supervise all sterile processing activities, including decontamination, preparation, sterilization, sterile storage, emergency/code cart assembly, and equipment cleaning and storage. Follows approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures to perform a variety of duties related to the care and reprocessing of flexible endoscopes, ultrasound transducers, and accessories. The SPD Supervisor will assist in budget preparation, perform annual staff evaluations, develop, and maintain staff schedules, and counsel and develop staff for success.

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the institute’s Linen and Lab Coat program. Responsibilities include inventory management, ordering, linen distribution, customer service, linen cost management, and quality control for all departments utilizing linen services throughout the institute.

Additional responsibilities of this position include creation and maintenance of departmental goals, customer service excellence, vendor relationship management, and policy and procedure development and review.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, organizes, allocates work to, and supervises the activities of staff on assigned shift engaged in the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of patient care items and equipment. Ensures all shift activities conform to established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintains endoscopy and ultrasound transducer equipment and accessories following infection control guidelines, departmental policies and procedures, and manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Assists SPD Manager and SPD System Administrator/Educator with orientation, training, and continuing education program for staff. Participates in the criteria-based performance appraisals of SPD staff.
  • In conjunction with SPD Manager, develops, implements, and monitors SPD policies and procedures.
  • Attends workshops and seminars to improve or maintain awareness of current practice and new procedures.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work area in compliance with all standards, regulations, and policies.
  • Monitors tardiness of SPD staff and reports any issues to SPD Manager.
  • Communicates and documents personnel issues to SPD Manager.
  • In cooperation with the SPD Manager, assists in maintaining quality assurance programs by performing tests to ensure items are sterile, interpreting data and verifying correct operation of equipment. Ensures equipment receives required preventative maintenance or repairs.
  • Works collaboratively with Materials Management staff as needed to maintain automated product ordering system e.g., stock replenishment, order requisition, product order confirmation, update product pricing, and new product information.
  • Interfaces with instrument tracking system for all functions of sterile processing. Documents/monitors all contents of loads, interfaces load to tracking system, loads cycle confirming correct parameters, monitors sterilizer/washer disinfector to tracking system information, records all pertinent information (biological, mechanical, and chemical).
  • Ensures that Sterile Processing Microsystems (SPM) Instrument Tracking System scanning protocols are followed consistently at each step in the sterilization/packaging process to accurately track equipment throughout the sterilization process and to identify equipment and instruments throughout the institute.
  • Maintains current and accurate surgical kit component lists.
  • Monitors and maintains emergency/code cart database.
  • Works with service representatives making recommendations to improve the overall quality and efficiency of linen services.
  • Manages personalized uniform program to include weekly audits to ensure wearer listing is updated and accurate.
  • Maintains accurate files of all linen delivered and sends information to necessary areas to evaluate usage and control costs.
  • Performs duties of assigned staff in response to emergency, changes in workload or staffing shortages.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures as well as thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques, equipment operations and instrument and equipment identification.
  • Knowledge of principles and recommended practice of steam sterilization and associated record keeping.
  • Knowledge of principles and recommended practice of cleaning and high-level disinfection of flexible endoscopes, probes, and associated record keeping.
  • Knowledge of distribution and utilization of supplies and equipment generally acquired through one to two years of technical training.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards, i.e., AAMI, TJC, OSHA, DPH, AORN.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office specifically, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiencies.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to include data analysis and judgment to make effective decisions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning and implementation skills.
  • Strong professional, interpersonal, critical thinking and skills.
  • Ability to adequately maintain all record keeping, inventory control, and related documentation.
  • Ability to problem solve and communicate findings effectively.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3 years recent experience in Sterile Processing required.
  • 1 year Lead Sterile Processing experience preferred.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) certification through Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) with annual renewal required.
  • Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL) certification through HSPA or Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) certification through CBSPD preferred.
  • Certified Endoscope Rreprocessor (CER) certification through HSPA or Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) certification through CBSPD preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The SPD Supervisor assumes responsibility of the department in the absence of the SPD Manager.
