User Experience (UX) Designers are responsible for creating satisfying and compelling experiences for users of a product, often drawing on results from user research and workflow analysis. They also provide product usability, evaluation, and support to product development teams, including the analysis and investigation of applications/systems including tactile methods, visual graphics, web, multimedia, voice response, and conversational user interaction.

As a UI/UX designer on the Costco Travel User Experience Research and Design team will advocate relentlessly for our users and promote innovative experiences with positive impact. We employ best practices of human-centered design thinking to solve business challenges and to improve the experience for our members and agents. Costco Travel is seeking a UX Designer with a background in both design and research who can help drive the future of Costco Travel’s growing User Experience practice. The UX Designer will be responsible for creating compelling experiences for the users of our products, drawing on results from user research, observation, and workflow analysis. The individuals in this role will work closely with Product Management to collaborate on defining design opportunities and utilize your expertise in UX and UI best practices.

ROLE

● Leads overall design strategy that meets business and user needs while considering technical limitations.

● Promotes and supports the principles of user-centered design to stakeholders and executives.

● Prepares and facilitates activities such as affinity diagramming, journey mapping, and user scenario or storyboarding exercises with stakeholders.

● Presents designs to business stakeholders for approval and is able to support design decisions with research and assessments.

● Manages stakeholder expectations and effectively negotiates trade-offs with stakeholders and executives.

● Creates detailed documentation in meetings, capturing discussions and feedback from stakeholders, and is accountable for managing UX action items identified in meetings.

● Performs quality assurance testing on developed pages and facilitates discussion to address defects/bugs.

● Conducts website research, such as assessments or competitive analysis of outside retailers.

● Prepares and facilitates usability testing (e.g. formative vs. summative test, moderated vs. unmoderated test, in-person vs. remote, A/B tests).

● Prepares and facilitates field research using the most appropriate evaluation method (observations, interviews, etc.).

● Prepares and conducts Card Sorting and Tree Tests.

● Creates sitemaps and process flows.

● Performs site and system content inventory audits and provides recommendations for changes needed to content based on design goals.

● Utilizes research tools such as Morae, Silverback, Optimal Workshop, etc.

● Adheres to best practices and common patterns across devices for interactions such as: form controls, mobile transitions, and desktop interactions (popovers, hover effects, etc.).

● Complies with usage of visualization principles/best practices and converts requirements into designs that are appropriate for users and their context of use.

● Identifies and resolves problems, often anticipating issues before they occur or before they grow; develops and evaluates options and implements solutions.

● Establishes the look and feel for various web interfaces, working within brand guidelines to create visual layouts.

● Contributes to defining our Style Guide by designing new visual design patterns and icons.

● Creates technical specifications to effectively implement design solutions, which may include defining the pixel size, height, and length of an interaction, and visual design while adhering to established Style Guide.

● Creates design concepts to build interactive prototypes and wireframes, demonstrating ability with prototyping tools, such as Adobe XD, Sketch, Figma or Axure.

● Creates user journey maps and process flows.

● Applies understanding and usage of appropriate accessibility (WCAG) patterns across devices (desktop, tablet, and mobile).

REQUIRED

● 3+ years demonstrated UX design experience, preferably with consumer and enterprise experience.

● A strong UX design portfolio of work demonstrating breadth and depth in interaction design, design strategy, and process. Portfolio should include evidence of the design process as well as deliverables (sketches, wireframes, mockups, etc.).

● Experience designing for both desktop and mobile.

● Experience applying WCAG standards to design concepts.

● Critical thinker able to work through complex variations and with high attention to detail.

● Proficient with modern design tools, such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or equivalent.

● Proficient with qualitative and quantitative user testing methodologies, such as user research, usability testing (moderated and unmoderated), A/B testing, and analytics.

● Proficient with unmoderated user research tools, such as UserTesting.com.

● Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and interpersonal) to influence all levels of stakeholders and executives within the organization.

● Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment to create top-performing interfaces.

● Ability to prioritize and manage several milestones and projects efficiently and simultaneously.

● Foundational knowledge of typography, layout, and visual design.

● Understands and has experience working with Agile methodologies.

● Experience doing visual design, interaction design, or similar role.

● Expert knowledge of design tools including Sketch and Invision.

● Experience working with other design-related software, such as Photoshop and Illustrator.

● Solid understanding of mobile UI patterns/interactions and experience designing for native mobile applications (Android and iOS).

● Demonstrated proficiency with selecting appropriate UI patterns and applying UCD methodologies to effectively solve design problems.

● Strong understanding of responsive web design principles, techniques, and frameworks.

● Experience with front end development technologies (HTML/CSS).

● Creative and pragmatic problem solver with a strong attention to detail.

● Strong presentation and facilitation skills to clearly communicate design decisions, and influence business process owners and stakeholders.

● Iteratively refine designs based on feedback and collaboration with executives, managers, and peers.

● Strong time management skills and the ability to be self-directed when needed.

● Ability to manage multiple projects at one time.

● Aware of current and emerging industry trends and best practices.

Recommended

● Graduate degree in User Centered Design or equivalent experience.

● 3 years’ experience with an agile development environment and methodologies

● Some experience with coding and ability to troubleshoot using HTML and CSS.

● Experience with Lean UX models and agile workflows.

● Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.

Pay Ranges:

Level 1 - $80,000 - $110,000

Level 2 - $105,000 - $135,000
