Department Summary

The Mathematics Department's mission is to introduce students to mathematics and statistics as important areas of human thought, to give students the mathematical and statistical knowledge necessary to teach mathematics at the secondary or elementary level, to prepare students for careers in statistics, data science, actuarial science, business, government, and industry, to serve the needs of students in fields that rely on mathematics and statistics, and to prepare students for graduate studies in mathematics and statistics. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with optional concentrations in pure mathematics and statistics, as well as minors in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science and a certificate in Data Analytics. We also offer graduate programs leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics and a Master of Science in Mathematics. The Mathematics Department is located in the state of the art $100M Dana Mohler-Faria Center for Science and Mathematics. The candidate will join seventeen Full Time Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty and one Full Time Temp Faculty in the department. In addition to serving approximately 125 majors, of which 41% are first-generation students, 23% are students of color and 25% are low-income students, we provide a large number of courses for the general student population.

Essential Duties

The Department of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University seeks a qualified and committed one-year full-time temporary faculty member for the 2025- 2026 academic year. The level of appointment (Instructor/Assistant Professor) depends on the highest degree held by the successful applicant, with a terminal degree being required for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor.

BSU faculty members teach 12 contact hours each semester. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses both within and beyond the mathematics major, ranging from introductory to more advanced. One-year temporary faculty members also participate in committee work and in departmental curriculum development. Successful candidates will work with their colleagues to help meet the mission of the department in serving and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse campus community.

Required Qualifications

A Master's degree in Mathematics, Applied Math, Statistics, Data Science or Education with a concentration in one of these areas is required.

Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and service, as well as demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.

They should also have the ability to work collaboratively and the ability to communicate effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

An MA or MS in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Math, or Data Science is strongly preferred. Significant coursework in the areas of Statistics or Data Science is preferred.
